RD:Appears to have inherited component. Controversial gene test available from Dr Whitely.. Renal ultrasound by expert US technician may exclude significant disease present, wedge section needed for full exclusion of disease but too invasive to e used for a screening tool in an otherwise healthy dog.Litter renal u/s can give peace of mind that no pups are affected significantly but needs to be done by expert ultrasonographer with good resolution equipment. Blood and urine testing for such will only reveal disease once kidneys are down to only 30% of function.(ie failing, less than one functioning kidney) so of poor value compared to the trauma to a pup collecting such(jugulr vein access).. Aim to competently renal ultrasound breeding dogs and litter if able to do so.
